Wonder of the Seas is the fifth Oasis-class ship in cruise operator Royal Caribbean International’s fleet of cruise ships.

The vessel was constructed at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, and is currently the world’s largest ocean cruise liner.

Construction of the cruise ship commenced in April 2019 with a steel-cutting ceremony held at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard.

Wonder of the Seas was successfully delivered in January 2022 and set sail on its maiden voyage in March 2022 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Specifications of the Wonder of the Seas

The Wonder of the Seas cruise ship is 362m long and 65m wide, with a draft of 30ft and a gross tonnage of 235,600t. Featuring 18 decks, the cruise ship is serviced by up to 2,300 crew members and can accommodate up to 7,084 guests across its 2,867 staterooms.

The ship is propelled by four bow thrusters, with each delivering 7,500hp to achieve a cruising speed of 22kt.

Neighbourhoods aboard the Wonder of the Seas

The Wonder of the Seas has eight neighbourhoods – Central Park, Boardwalk, Pool & Sports Zone, Entertainment Place, Royal Promenade, Vitality Spa & Fitness Centre, Youth Zone and Suite Neighbourhood.

Central Park is the first living park at sea and houses more than 20,000 plants and features elevated speciality restaurants and high-end boutiques. Guests can enjoy the open-air oasis during the day and live music events under the stars in the evening.

The Boardwalk is an open-air stretch at the end of the ship with unique features including a classic hand-carved carousel, twin rock-climbing walls and the AquaTheater at the aft of the ship. The Pool & Sports Zone neighbourhood features the FlowRider surf simulators, swimming pools and whirlpools, a ten-deck-high zip line and the ten-story plunge down Ultimate Abyss. The neighbourhood also features basketball and volleyball courts and a mini-golf course.

The Entertainment Place hosts unique night shows and original productions at the Royal Theatre. The neighbourhood also features ice-skating rinks and the Spotlight Karaoke which allows passengers to participate in karaoke in front of a live audience.

At the heart of the cruise ship is the Royal Promenade which houses shopping, dining and entertainment spaces. The Vitality Spa & Fitness Centre neighbourhood has a dedicated spa and fitness centre offering dynamic exercise classes at the full-scale gym and spa treatments. It also houses the Vitality Café which serves smoothies and fresh sandwiches.

The Youth Zone is a neighbourhood dedicated to exploration and adventure. The neighbourhood includes the Adventure Ocean youth programme, a youth club on Royal Caribbean ships for guests aged between three and 17 years and a nursery for infants and toddlers, providing them with educational activities and games.

The Suite Neighbourhood specifically serves suite guests. It provides a private experience including world-class dining, a sun deck, a private lounge and a restaurant. Furthermore, The Suite Neighbourhood houses the expansive Ultimate Family Suite – a new cabin style for families.

The ship also features the Perfect Storm racing waterslides, the Wonder Playscape underwater-themed outdoor play area for kids and other areas designed specifically for kids and teens.

Dining venues and other amenities

The Wonder of the Seas ship features nine complementary and 12 speciality dining facilities across its decks. It includes The Mason Jar Southern Restaurant & Bar, which is the Royal Caribbean’s first southern restaurant and features farmhouse-style décor and live music. It also offers a wide variety of bars and lounges, with a total of 12 bars across the ship.

Other amenities aboard the Wonder of the Seas cruise ship include a conference centre, a medical centre and a pharmacy. Entertainment options include an outdoor movie screen, a casino royale and a music hall.

Contractors involved

ROBOS Contract Furniture, a custom-made furniture supplier, was the main supplier for indoor and outdoor furnishing. The company also supplied furnishings for the Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas cruise ships.

Vestnes Ocean, a supplier of furnishings, installed furnishings in some of the interior areas of the ship including the wheelhouse, crew gym, engine control room and safety control room.

Interior design company EVO Design was contracted by Chantiers de l’Atlantique to supply loft-type suites for the ship.
