Damen Shipyards Group has acquired the world’s first maritime-certified, multi-purpose battery container, Skoonbox, from Skoon Energy in order to lower emissions.
The 20ft container will be used for the delivery of renewable power at Damen’s own yards for applications where diesel generators or the engines of ships are currently used.
Damen noted that this container is the company’s maiden step towards a sustainable battery network for mobile and temporary applications.
The container can eventually be deployed for global customers.
Damen Shipyards Group official Vincent de Maat said: “The Skoonbox, and the clean energy systems coming in its wake, are opening up tremendous opportunities for us to reduce our ecological footprint and those of our customers.
“This is a sustainable replacement for diesel generators but it can also be used as a green form of shore power, allowing ships berthed at our repair yards to turn off their on-board engines. That saves a lot of emissions.”
Unveiled during the 2018 World Port Days, the Skoonbox, which includes 314 lithium batteries, has since undergone major developments.
Recently, the container has been used for several applications in the Amsterdam Port Area in the Netherlands.

Last November, Damen obtained the official European Union (EU) Stage V certification for its Damen Emission Reduction System.
